Introduction to Survival Craft

Prerequisites: This course shall have no formal pre-requisite.

Course Length: 6 hours - Course length shall vary depending on the number of delegates. Total course time includes breaks.

Class Size: The maximum number of delegates that may be trained and tested per instructor shall be sixteen (16) in the classroom session and sixteen (16) in the practical session.

Course Objective

  • Actions when mustering and boarding a survival craft (TEMPSC) as a passenger during launching operations
  • Provide delegates the knowledge to operate a davit system to launch and recover a lifeboat
  • Give an overview of location and usage emergency equipment including locating devices, first aid kits, and pyrotechnics
  • Provide delegates with the proper direction to command the lifeboat using a magnetic compass
  • Proper technique for streaming a drogue/sea anchor
  • Identify and operate lifeboat equipment

Successful Course Completion

  • Requires a minimum score of 75% or better.
  • Delegates will have no more than thirty (30) minutes to complete the exam.
  • Grades shall be calculated by dividing the number of questions answered correctly by the total number of exam questions.
  • Successful completion of practical session is mandatory.

Practical Session
Practical shall verify the following:

  • Mustering, donning a life jacket, boarding and strapping in as a TEMSC passenger (the craft then to be lowered into the water and released)
  • The correct actions when mustering and boarding a survival craft (TEMPSC) as a passenger during launching operations
    • Upon notification by an alarm, delegates will muster and don life jacket
    • Upon notification by an alarm, delegates will board the life boat and strap in
    • Life boat will be lowered to the water and hooks released
    • Delegates will exit the life boat at the lowered position
