HAZWOPER Specialist Level

Day 1 - Operations Level

• Provide knowledge of the basic hazard and risk assessment techniques.
• Understand basic hazardous materials terms.
• Know how to select and use proper personal protective equipment provided to the first responder operational level.
• Know how to perform basic control, containment and/or confinement operations within capabilities.
• How to implement basic decontamination procedures.
• Provide an understanding of the relevant standard operating procedures and termination procedures.
• Delegates should be able to demonstrate knowledge during written examination.

Day 2 – Incipient Firewatch/Medic First Aid/CPR/AED

• Provide delegates the necessary skills to safely perform incipient firefighting duties.
• General housekeeping rules to prevent fires.
• Discuss the classifications of fire.
• Discuss the classifications of fire extinguishers.
• Teach basic methods of fire extinguishment.
• Incipient firefighting hazards.
• Teach general industry hot work & fire watch regulations and procedures.
• Delegates should be able to demonstrate the necessary skills during practical examination and demonstrate knowledge during written examination.
• Provide delegates with the core knowledge to perform basic first aid.
• Provide delegates with the core knowledge to perform Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) with or without the use of an Automated External Defibrillator (AED).
• Provide delegates with the understanding of Universal Precautions and how to protect themselves from Bloodborne Pathogens (BBP)

Day 3 - Technician Level

• Provide formal class instruction to describe the requirements and related information that a Hazmat trainee must possess in order to become a competent “Hazmat Technician” level employee.
• Provide the training and certification to individuals that have a desire and can demonstrate the formal skills necessary to become a HAZMAT Technician.
• Know the classification, identification and verification of known and unknown materials by using field survey instruments and equipment.
• Be able to function within an assigned role in the Incident Command System.
• Know how to select and use proper specialized chemical personal protective equipment provided to the hazardous materials technician.
• Understand and implement decontamination procedures.
• Understanding of relevant standard operating procedures and termination procedures.
• Understand basic chemical and toxicological terminology and behavior.
• Delegates should be able to demonstrate knowledge during written examination.

Day 4 & 5 - Specialist Level

• Provide formal class instruction to describe the requirements and related information that a HAZMAT trainee must possess in order to  become a competent “HAZMAT Specialist” level employee.
• Provide the training and certification to individuals that have a desire and can demonstrate the formal skills necessary to become a HAZMAT Specialist.
• Know how to implement an emergency response plan.
• Learn the importance and reasons for proper communication with varies news media agencies concerning a facility incident.
• Understand classification, identification and verification of known and unknown materials by using advanced survey instruments and equipment.
• Learn the duties and responsibilities of the Incident Commander and associated incident
  or emergency response personnel.
• Be able to perform specialized control, containment, and/or confinement operations within the capabilities of the resources and personal protective equipment available.
• Be able to determine and implement decontamination procedures.
• Know of the state emergency response plan.
• Have the ability to develop a site safety and control plan.
• Understand chemical, radiological and toxicological terminology and behavior.
• Delegates should be able to demonstrate the necessary skills during practical examination and demonstrate knowledge during written examination.

Successful Course Completion

• Requires a minimum score of 75% or better.
• Delegates will have no more than thirty (30) minutes to complete the exam.
• Grades shall be calculated by dividing the number of questions answered correctly by the total number of exam questions.

Practical Session

Day 2 - Incipient Firewatch/Medic First Aid/CPR/AED
Practical shall verify the following:

• Properly select and wear appropriate PPE during practical training
• Inspect and identify damaged extinguishers
• Select appropriate extinguisher and firefighting equipment
• Effectively communicate with others in the area using proper alerting techniques
• Demonstrate use of firefighting equipment
• Demonstrate firefighting techniques as discussed in theory
• Demonstrate how to extinguish a fire
• Properly remove used extinguishers from service
• Caring for Cardiac Arrest
• Control of Bleeding

Day 4 & 5 - Specialist Level
Practical training shall utilize a table top scenario which allows for open discussion involving
individual company procedures for a similar incident.

Practical shall verify the following:

• Properly select and wear appropriate PPE during practical training
• Inspect and identify damaged tools/PPE
• Effectively don all required PPE
• Implement Emergency Response Plan and establish an Incident Command
• Respond to a spill and implement response containment
• Use tools and equipment to properly neutralize a hazardous waste cleanup
• Properly utilize decontamination equipment
• Properly navigate all decontamination stations
• Ability to properly dispose of all contaminated PPE and HAZMAT Tools
